Eid Woos Bangladesh with Record Markets, but 9.13% Inflation Bites Back

Bangladesh’s record Tk 300,000 crore Eid economy struggles with 9.13% inflation. Millions travel home despite persistent highway safety fears

A Three-Trillion Taka Party

The Eid economy in Bangladesh is now a giant. It is worth more than Tk 300,000 crore this year. This seasonal spending gives a massive boost to the whole country. People spend money on many different things. Clothing and fashion take the biggest slice, around 40% to 80% of the total. Footwear, jewelry, and cosmetics also see a huge jump in sales. The market for Iftar food items alone is worth about Tk 17,400 crore.

Millions of people leave the cities to celebrate in their villages. This travel sector generates around Tk 10,000 crore in transactions. Remittances from workers abroad flood the markets with billions of dollars. Even furniture and electronics see higher demand during this time. It is a season where cash flows heavily from urban areas to rural markets.

Inflation: The Grinch of the Grameen Markets

Inflation is an economic state where prices rise over time. It makes the purchasing power of your money go down. Currently, general inflation in Bangladesh has hit a high of 9.13%. Food inflation is even higher at 9.30%. This hurts the wallets of every individual shopper.

High inflation can cripple the economy by slowing down trade and production. It also disrupts agricultural supply chains. People cannot afford luxury items like they used to. They are switching to “non-brand” clothes to save money. Many shoppers are now moving from expensive malls to roadside stalls. These sidewalk vendors are seeing more customers because of the high prices elsewhere.

Couture in the City, Crumbs in the Village

The Eid economy highlights a big gap between the rich and the poor. High-end malls in Dhaka are packed with people seeking luxury. Garment workers often use their small bonuses only for basic needs. The profits from this spending are not shared equally. Producers at the bottom of the chain often fail to see the benefits.

However, religious acts like Zakat and Fitra help bridge this gap if over Tk 81,000 crore is redistributed through Zakat alone. This gives the poor some power to buy food and new clothes. The mass migration to villages also moves wealth to rural families.

The Great Eid Race: Fast and Furious

Eid travel is often a nightmare on the roads. We see tragic accidents that claim many lives every year. Highways struggle to handle the huge surge of vehicles. Drivers are often tired and drive for too many hours without rest. Many buses on the road are old and poorly maintained.

We will only be free from this fear when laws are strictly enforced. The police must treat road accidents as serious crimes. We need modern technology like speed cameras and better road markings. Safety is a shared responsibility between drivers, passengers, and the government. Without these changes, every Eid will continue to be a time of mourning for some families.
