Hard To Know What’s AI And What’s Human

97% of listeners can’t tell AI-generated music from human-made tracks, Deezer–Ipsos survey finds

A global survey by music streaming platform Deezer and research firm Ipsos shows that 97% of people cannot tell the difference between music made by artificial intelligence and songs created by humans.

The study surveyed 9,000 people across eight countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan. It is one of the first large studies focused only on how people feel about AI-generated music.

Concerns about artists were also clear. About 70% of respondents believe AI-generated music threatens the future income of musicians and composers. Most people also oppose using copyrighted music to train AI systems without permission from the original creators.

Deezer says the amount of AI-generated music is growing fast. Around 50,000 fully AI-made tracks are now uploaded to the platform every day, making up about one-third of all new uploads.

To address this, Deezer has introduced a system that detects and clearly labels 100% AI-generated music. These tracks are also removed from recommendations and playlists, as the company says it aims to protect artists while giving listeners clear information.

Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the results show that people care about knowing who or what is behind the music they listen to, and that fairness for artists must remain a priority as AI continues to develop.
